Setting Hotness
It is tempting to set the Hotness slider all the way up to 99% on all your friends and favorite places, but actually, it’s not the best strategy.
You don’t want to set any entity – Person or Place, to a very high hotness, because they have no way to get hotter when they are near other hot People or Places.
Try setting your friends to 25%, and a few really good friends to 50%, and maybe one very best friend to 75%. This gives them plenty of room to adjust up and down as they interact with other entities. Touching the words under the slider is a good way to set these exact percentages. For example, touch the word “Hot” under the slider, and the slider will snap to exactly 50%.
It’s the same way with negative hotness. Set most such people and places to a cool setting of -25%, and maybe a one to a Cold -50%.
Why set such moderate values? Because moderate values will show much more variation in hotness than extreme ones when they are influenced by other entities.
Suppose you have a Place set to 99% hotness. If a person set to 0% Basic Hotness goes there, his Current Hotness will rise to about 50%, which is quite a difference, and of course if more hot people go there, he will rise even more. If a Person set to 90% Basic Hotness goes to that Place, they will only rise to about 93%, a difference you can barely see. It’s better to have a nice friend set to 25%, and you’ll really notice a rise when they gather near other friends.
Radius of Influence
There are usually a number of influences on Current Hotness – the proximity of all the People and Places within the Radius of Influence, and the Relevance of multiple Things all can be involved. Make sure there is room for these influences to have effect.
The Radius of Influence varies with multiple factors, but is typically about three kilometers. Of course, the farther away something is and the closer its Basic Hotness is to zero, the less influence it has, and if it is out of the Radius of Influence or has zero hotness, it has no effect at all.
