AirMote Access

To let AirMote connect to your computer, you have to make sure permissions are set up to allow it.

To permit connections over your local wireless WiFi network on a Macintosh running OS X 10.5 Leopard:

  1. Open System Preferences. The preferences window will appear.
  2. Select the Sharing icon. The Sharing pane will appear.
  3. Select the Remote Management service in the list at the left side so it is highlighted. Turn on the Remote Management checkbox. The main part of the window will say “Remote Management: On”.
  4. Select the “Computer Settings…” button. A dialog box will drop down.
  5. Turn on the checkbox for “VNC viewers may control screen with password” and enter a password. You will need to supply this password in the AirMote application when making a connection.
  6. Select the OK button, and close the System Preferences window. Now, when you start AirMote, your computer should appear in the Add Connection screen’s “Local WiFi Connections” list. If it still does not, check firewall and WiFi settings.

AirMote should be able to connect to any Macintosh computer running OS X 10.4 or above, using similar settings. If your computer is on the Internet and proper ports are set up, you should be able to make a connection by specifying the DNS network name of the computer, or it’s IP address, in the Address field of an Advanced manual connection.

Though we believe AirMote should be able to connect to computers running Windows or another operating system set up to accept VNC viewers, it hasn’t been fully tested with non-Macintosh computers, so connection is not guaranteed.

If you want to experiment, on a Windows computer, you might install a VNC server. One you might try is RealVNC free edition. Set up the VNC server. Allow it to connect using standard port 5900 and set a password. Also set any necessary firewall and network permissions. Add an Advanced connection to AirMote, specifying the network or IP address of the computer and the password. Good luck!

Hi I just downloaded your Airmote app for the iphone. I have looked at a lot of app like this but the reason I chose your app is because your app said it can work on only on WiFi but also using the mobile network. Considering I do not have WiFi at work this was huge! So I instantly downloaded. But I am having trouble getting my phone and my laptop connected. Can you help!!!

I am running Snow Leopard. I was able to get the app to work from my home network but am not able to figure it out for the university network that I am on. Any ideas?

      • Brad my first guess would be some kind of firewall problem. For AirMote to connect, it needs port number 5900 to be open. You might be able to fiddle with this. You could also tell AirMote to connect over a different port number which is open, but it can be trickier to get the target computer to look for a different port.
